the os doesnt even start up. any planning ? i have imporant things of teh knotty drive so i dont want to re install windows xp home edition.

download, from a friends PC, an ISO copy of Knoppix. It is a Linux bootable disc that will not install on your hard drive. When it boots, you will know how to copy your info/data to an external drive or flash drive. It also comes with a compact disc burning program.
There's two choices: take the computer to a background recovery service and hold them get your files out or enjoy a computer expert sit down at the computer and try to refresh the window program only. The second is tricky so don't try it yourself. It also won't work if the current window program is totally trashed. However, you could save the cost of background recovery which can mount up particularly quickly.
