Or should i in recent times give it to charity.... It's get a 2mhz processor running XP, 512ram, 40 GB HD and 128mb ATI graphics card - is this worth much now??

Yeah. Ebay it for around 250 to 300 bucks. Or donate it as it will engender you feel melt and toasty inside.
you didn't say how aged it was... That is the most vital thing... The elder the computer is the less it is worth especially on laptops.
You can offer it to charity if you would like, but depending on what brand it is, whether or not you hold the XP key, as all right as the video card, it is probably worth at least 300-400$, if more. Check the maker's website, and see if they still sell it, or if you can find the model # (found on the bottom most likely). You could also check on eBay to see what they are selling for on their completed auctions, after you know the brand and a few other details.

its not worth much... probably something like $200-300 .If you sell it on ebay you might carry more than you were expecting because several people dont know or rate attention to exactly what they are bidding for
It really depends on how old the apparatus is and in what running condition it is contained by. Based on what you've told me so far, I'd recommend donating to charity. This could be best used as a laptop for some single purpose like a net based registration system or similar contained by a school (this is something we did for our PTA). It is other worth something on eBay. Just type in your model number and see how several matches you gain, this will give you an thought of what your laptop is selling at.



If you don't want to do eBay, donating it to a school or church or community center is another chance.
