I lately bought a new HP laptop near a dual-core Turion processor, but it feels uncomfortably hot on my disappeared hand and wrist. I enjoy the machine on a flat desk so I don't reflect on circulation is the issue. Is this typical with contemporary laptops? If not I'll be taking this one back.

Yes this is expected. Since most laptops are severely compact and the processors generate quite a bit of fry. So, there is nil to worry roughly speaking.
Laptops tend to get pretty warm because of the proximity of the processor to the satchel. You can however tweak certain aspects of the CPU such as voltage to obtain it to run cooler.
